Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
Native son of Flint, Michigan, you grew up with the sport of soccer at Wabash College, where your father, Bernie, was a professor of Spanish. You and your talented teammates helped the Wabash soccer program work through its infancy under the leadership of coaches Philip Daly and Doug Landgraf. A political science major, you came into a Wabash soccer program that had won only one game in its first four seasons, but your capable leadership as captain of the 1972 team helped it post a remarkable record of 8-3 with stunning wins over Ball State, Wheaton, and DePauw (twice). You were, of course, decorated for your outstanding play — three-year letterman; team captain; 1970 Most Valuable Player; three-time all-conference selection; all-state; and Indiana-Ohio All-Star. Indeed, your Wabash soccer experience — as player and captain — earned you recognition as one of the Outstanding Collegiate Athletes of America in 1973.
Your love of sport has continued throughout your life, whether it be on the water where you race yachts and windsurf; on the snowboarding and ski slopes of northern Michigan; on the ice as a rugged adult hockey player; or on the soccer field, where you’ve coached boys and girls soccer at the youth and high school level for 20 years. A graduate of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Coaching Academy, you’ve been named a district coach of the year and have guided your Charlevoix High School girls team to the highest academic rank in the state of Michigan. For helping put the Wabash soccer program on the map and for a lifetime commitment to student-athletes as coach and mentor, the National Association of Wabash Men is proud to induct you, Hagen B. Manker, into the Wabash College Athletic Hall of Fame.
