John came to Wabash from Indianapolis and quickly established himself as one of the hardest working all-around students in his class. This love of rigorous activity carried over in his business life and his loyalty to Wabash.

A trustee of the College since 1939, John served as secretary and from 1965 to 1975 as president of the Board of Trustees. In 1985, the board conferred upon him the status of Trustee Emeritus.

As a devout follower of Wabash athletics, John once noted, "Tennis is a good medium for the development of a sound body, good sportsmanship, and a competitive spirit." His long-time interest in Wabash tennis culminated with his donation of the Wabash College Tennis Center at the 1969 Commencement. After the 1965 football season, John was awarded the Spirit of the Little Giant Award for his behind-the-scenes devotion to Wabash athletics. He will go down in Wabash history as one of the greatest Little Giant boosters of all time.
