Neal came to Wabash from Mellott, Indiana, and was captain of Pete Vaughan's first Little Giant football team in 1919. He later transferred to Washington and Jefferson, where he was an All-American, and played in the 1922 Rose Bowl.

Neal rejoined Vaughan at Wabash in 1927 as an assistant coach. Named head coach at DePauw, he built a 79-34-7 record in 16 seasons with the Tigers. His 1933 team was undefeated, untied, and unscored on.

Many years after his student days he had all of his college credits transferred back to Wabash and was made a member of his original class of 1920. He received the Wabash Alumni Award of Merit in 1953 and, along with his cousin Pete Thorn '24, is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. He died in 1977.
