Showalter came to Wabash College from Wabash, Indiana. He was a four-year letterman in football, and was captain of the 1913 team under coach Clarence Thurber. Most of his football career was played under Wabash Hall of Fame coach Jesse Harper.

"Showy" was a freshman teammate of Sap Wilson in the fall of 2010 when Wabash won four games by shutout before cancelling the remainder of the season due to the tragic death of Wilson in the game against St. Louis.

Showalter served the College for many years as one of the greatest class agents, boasting 100 percent participation in support of Wabash from his classmates for many years, a feat which was achieved on the 50th anniversary of his class in 1964. "Showy" received the Alumni Award of Merit in 1960. He died June 6, 1978 at his home in Wabash, Indiana.
