Your roots are in Indianapolis, yet you’ve become a figure of international stature in the sporting world. As a Wabash man, you excelled in tennis as a three-year letterman under Coach Bernie Manker, and were a part of teams that were dominant on a national level, peaking with a sixth place finish in Division III. Politics grabbed your attention immediately after Wabash, and you served as campaign manager for successful campaigns by Indianapolis Mayor William Hudnut, and Congressman and Senator Dan Quayle. You even served as an administrative assistant to Senator Quayle in Washington. You left politics to work at Eli Lilly and Company, where you were the executive director of corporate relations and worked with the Endowment. You began to distinguish yourself in the sports world as the president of the Organizing Committee for the Tenth Pan American Games in Indianapolis, managing a staff of 350 paid employees and more than 38,000 volunteers. Indeed, your work managing people and 27 competitive venues, brought honor and esteem to the City of Indianapolis.
You worked with 38 national Olympic organizing committees, 28 international federations, and managed a $100 million enterprise. You later worked as tournament director for the GTE Tennis Championships in Indianapolis, earning Tournament of the Year recognition by the Association of Touring Professionals. In 1990, the ATP lured you away from Indianapolis to its headquarters in Ponte Vedre Beach, recognizing in you superior management abilities and a knack for marketing the game of tennis. You are the CEO of the ATP Tour, the head of the governing body of men’s professional tennis. Under your leadership, the ATP Tour conducts 70 tournaments in 30 countries, making it a truly global sport, and you a key global leader in sports. For your love of tennis and your innovative leadership of the professional game, the National Association of Wabash Men is pleased to induct you into the Wabash College Athletic Hall of Fame.
