Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
Lynn H. Garrard came to Wabash in the Fall of 1960 as a graduate of Griffith High School in Northwest Indiana, where he was named the Hammond Times Athlete of the Year in 1960 as a three-sport athÂlete excelling in the sports of football, basÂketball, and track. He remains perhaps the finest athlete ever to attend Wabash from the "Region." At Wabash, Garrard majored in biology and starred in two sports, but earned a total of nine letters in three sports. A four-year football letterman, several of Garrard's versatile records continue to stand in the Wabash record books 31 years after the completion of his athletic career. As a member of Coach Garland Frazier's last Little Giant team and three-year star in Coach Ken Keuffel's single-wing atÂtack, Garrard proved to be one of the most versatile players ever to wear the Scarlet. Punter, kicker, passer, runner, and receiver; he could do it all, and do it well. He led the state in scoring in both his junior and senior years, earning Wabash Most Valuable Player status in both of those seasons as tailback, receiver, kicker, and punter. He averaged 43.7 yards per punt as a junior, which is still a Wabash record, as is his 38.5 career punting average. Against Heidelberg in his senior year, Garrard scored three touchdowns, two as an offensive player and one on a 95-yard interception return. Twice he returned punts 73 yards, once against Wheaton in 1962 and again versus Bradley in 1963. In his senior season of 1963, Garrard was captain, MVP, and Honorable Mention Little All-American for a Keuffel-coached team that went 4-4- 1, but was just 12 points away from a 7-1-1 season. Four letters in track and another in basketball, plus two Big State javelin championÂships were more feathers in his cap. He held the Wabash record for the longest javelin throw in school history until 1980, and still owns the second best mark all-time. The 1963 Dean Stephens Award as the outstanding member of the junior class, Garrard was also a member of Phi Delta Theta, Sphinx Club and Glee Club, while earning the Pete Vaughan Outstanding Athlete Award. Following graduation from Wabash, Garrard earned his masters degree in education from Indiana University in 1978. For the past 31 years, he has been a loyal and dedicated teacher, coach, and administrator for the students at Elkhart Central High School. Long-time science teacher and assistant coach in football and track, he most recently began service as Administrative Assistant for Student Programs and Assistant Athletic Director at CenÂtral High. For 12 years Garrard also oversaw the operations of the Elkhart Sectional Boys High School Basketball Tournament. Garrard and his wife, Janine, have a son named Marc.
