William Carl Ahrbecker ’88
Wabash Athletics Hall of Fame
November 12, 2010

William Carl Ahrbecker, when you arrived on campus from Indianapolis in the fall of 1984, you brought with you a stellar high school resume — four letters each in wrestling and football, and Academic All-State recognition in both sports. It was hardly a surprise that you would become one of the most accomplished student-athletes in Wabash history.

You majored in psychology and minored in mathematics, and graduated summa cum laude with a 3.87 grade point average. You not only made the Dean’s List in every semester, you received four academic citations, earned distinction on your comprehensive exams, were inducted in Phi Beta Kappa, and were selected as the commencement speaker for the Class of 1988. You served as president of the psychology honor society, Psi Chi, and you received both the Peck Medal and the Indianapolis Alumni Association Scholar-Athlete Award. As a four-year letterman on Coach Max Servies’ wrestling teams, you posted a combined record of 58-20 and won three Little State Championships. As a senior, you went 29-6 — the most wins ever at 190 pounds — and you captured titles at Little State, the Wittenberg Invitational, and the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Named a captain and the team’s Most Valuable Wrestler, you led the Little Giants to a 20-1-1 dual meet record, qualified for the national championships, and were named a Scholar Athlete by the Wrestling Coaches Association. Coach Servies described you as “the epitome of the student-athlete” and said you were “one of the most sterling characters” he’s ever coached.

The National Association of Wabash Men agrees with Coach Servies, and is proud to induct you in the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame. Bill Ahrbecker — Some Little Giant!
